If you go down further in the wikipedia entry for Cleaver, you'll find a link to Broadsword, and then go on to the Chinese Dao; I guess Cleavers and Broadswords may have been used interchangably.

Let's see...I may have to get some of these for some Emelanian Calvarymen...;)

but I suggest shortening the handle, since the blade is already shorter than the TLC scimitar. Right now, the handle is big enough to accommodate two hands, which would be appropriate for LEGO videogame models. On a real minifig, you could get away with a very short handle that's just big enough for the minifig's hand. A smaller handle will give the sword more dexterity and playability, and it will look even more authentic, because it will be in scale with the smaller blade.

Some corrections: The handle on the real item is quite long. Blade to handle ratio has been scaled by Will almost perfectly here. It doesn't get more authentic than that. The issue may be that the TLG item is so massively oversized that this item doesn't seem long enough to need the extra handle length. But I've used the real thing, and I can assure you that it is a two-hand weapon. And the real thing, as I said, has a very elongated handle - much more than is necessary for two hands.

I assume the issue is that you're seeing this as some kind of Middle-eastern weapon. It isn't. This piece is designed after the heavy-bladed Chinese dadao. Very different weapons.

Because they're totally different weapons. A dadao translates loosely to 'big cleaver.' Scimitar is an Anglicized version of Shamshir - which relates primarily to single-hand slashing swords of Middle-eastern origin.

By way of comparison, this is a dadao in real life, whereas this is a real-life scimitar, or shamshir.

Will is choosing not to use the term 'broadsword' for this item. While it is a rough word used for this type of Chinese sword, it also has a lot of (false and misleading) implications relating to European medieval swords. Since dadao translates essentially into 'cleaver' - that's the current title the weapon is going under. The name may change prior to the actual release of the item, however.

Hmmm. . . Maybe he was going to surprise us? Will always has that ability to surprise people.

My boat and that of the few billion or so folks out there who speak Mandarin.

"Dao", the second character of dadao (the weapon that the BrickArms cleaver is based on), is exceptionally versatile. In the broadest sense, it simply means "knife", although depending on the other characters found around it, is also often translated as cleaver or broadsword.

See the post Damien made above in regards to the differences between the dadao and the "scimitar" (really the shamshir).

In terms of marketing, given Will completely captured the essence of the dadao, that's likely to be the name of the accessory to prevent any confusion.

No one does, not even Will. However, work on finalizing several designs of new accessories has been progressing rapidly, and you can expect many new BrickArms products to be available in the coming months.

I suggest having the cleaver molded a silver colour instead of the current speckled black. After all, blades are supposed to be silvery and it makes it seem all the more metallic.

Keep in mind that any images you see of new items that are not for sale on the website are prototypes. Prototypes are made on Will's home equipment and, therefore, are injected with a wider variety of colours. Prototype images do not necessarily reflect the exact design or colour of the final item. You can be fairly certain that any silver item BrickArms offers in the future will use the same silver colour as the current BrickArms silver items.

So Damien, will the Cleaver be sold in colour choices like the Uzi-in-a-suitcase item? With the black, brown, white and reddish brown cases being available, likewise, will there be colour choices for the Cleaver?

Absolutely not.

The briefcase is only offered in such a wide variety of colours because the briefcase itself is an official LEGO piece. You'll notice that NO items produced -by- BrickArms at this time are available in that kind of colour variety. The Cleaver will be available in silver, and quite possibly black. Beyond that, you will have to wait and see.

Oh right. I was just wondering because of the silver, grey and brown Brickarms that come free with purchases. So, black and silver, eh? Something else to look forward to then!

Man, i only have one medival-ish fig and i think i could use this! Way better than TLC's scimitar. It's horribly curved. (although I can't imagine it being used in WWII...)

Actually, the dadao is a fairly recent Chinese weapon, being developed in the Ming dynasty and rising to prominence during the Qing dynasty. It's most famous for its use by Nationalist Chinese troops during WWII in the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Pictures of said troops.
