As you all know by now, I have a small CNC machine (a drill that is controlled by a computer) that I use to cut my prototype molds.

For now, I've been content to use end mills (drill bits with special shapes and cutting edges) to cut cavities in materials. I had yet to use the CNC for other things.

"What other things?", you ask. Routing!

"Routing" means to cut around a shape, instead of into it. I happened to have a nice engraving bit with a V-shaped tip in my parts drawer that I've been wanting to use for weeks, but could not think of a killer way to use it.

Enter Halo3. No, I don't have my copy yet (the UPS truck is delivering it today), but I've been bit by the Halo bug like everyone else in the world that has an Xbox 360. I've always been fascinated with the Covenant Energy Sword (or Plasma Sword as some people call it). I happened to run across a transparent blue Lego panel in my parts box last night and said "Aha!". 10 minutes later, I drew an outline in Corel, imported it into my software, selected the Engraver bit from the tools list, and created a path for the CNC to cut out the energy sword!

Here is the result. It is still a work in progress. I plan to use the injection molder to inject a round ABS handle completely around the clear handle area, to give it a finished look. I'll bring it to NWBrickCon in October for all of you to see.

Cool! You don't plan on selling them, do you?

That's pretty cool. I wish I had enough money for one of those machines. :(

I knew you are or eventually were going to do something Halo related.

Eagerly awaiting every single new BrickArm that comes out.

These are merely tests of my CNC's routing capabilities. I wanted to see it I could quickly and easily cut any shape out of a real Lego brick.

I tried it on an IronMan torso, intending to cutout a pattern of holes to match the beam emitters he has, but I couldn't clamp down the torso tight enough to keep it from flexing during the cut. As a result, some of the holes ended up elliptical. Not good.

Just image what the CNC could do to a 2x4 brick! I could hollow out the sides and top, making it look as if it were a wireframe version of the real thing.

I have more testing to do! I'll post more items when I can.

I've never played HALO nor am I in any way a gamer but seeing that sword made me sit up in my chair. Nothing like it has ever been made as a minifig accessory, and that alone makes it fascinating, let alone the possibilities the "routing" procedure offers.

While Will thus far has chosen only to produce modern, WWII, and some sci-fi firearms, I personally wouldn't want him to limit himself to those just items for all time. Will's been fantastic when it comes willingness to experiment to find innovative ways of providing quality accessories (hence the above laser sword), and if there's an interesting item we haven't seen before that he can produce using these new techniques, I'd love to see it part of the Brickarms line-up.

Offering a variety of accessories while maintaining the high level of quality and playability that is a Brickarms tradition can only increase his business as well as providing customizers with new and exciting items.

i think this is off topic but this is not the first energy sword, some guy made one but he hacked away a windshield pice.

[ADMIN - Yes, it is off topic. Why does it make any difference if someone else has made an energy sword before? Can you offer a comment on the topic of 'CNC as a Lego router'? --Will]

Ye Sabre-Scorpion made one for his original Halo customs, it was good but I have to say Will's is more Lego-ish.

[ADMIN - Brick_Freak, please watch your language on the forums. And if it is not too much trouble, can you please try to use punctuation and capitalization in your sentences from now on? Thanks. ---Will]

[MOD - Attempting to bribe Will into selling you this item is not appropriate nor is it likely to be effective. If Will chooses to make this weapon available, he will. If not, the picture is there for you to enjoy his customizing skills and to inspire you to try your hand at making your own. - badger]

I don't plan on offering this through BrickArms. I may make a few to arm a few Halo Spartans, but that would be all.

Ah, too bad. i saw your other Halo weapons. Very nice! Now I'm kind of bummed out. I would pay $3 each if you are willing to sell.
